Q & A Session with your coach:

What are a few of your Judo highlights?

Being number 1 for GB.   World cup medallist.  Commonwealth Games medallist and British Open Champion.

Favourite sport outside judo?

Football.  Massive Liverpool FC fan.  Travelled to UEFA Champions League finals to watch it.  Amazing!

Hobbies?

Falconry for the last ten years.  I fly a Goshawk and a Falcon, working with my two German Short-Haired Pointers.   A boyhood dream to participate in the oldest sport in the world.

Keeping Fit

In the gym Monday – Friday, no more than 45 minutes.  Cycling twice a week.

Favourite charity?

Finlay’s Friends – a fabulous charity, run by the parents of one of our pupils in memory of their son, who had also been one of our kids.  This wonderful charity, which DJ supports, supplies support boxes with vital and practical contents for parents, unexpectedly in hospital, during the critical first period of life.

Pets?

Two magnificent German Short-Haired Pointers and a small, Striated Scops Owl called Jupi (short for Jupiter).

Favourite country?

Italy – we go to the same place every year and enjoy the friendships we’ve built up, the food is great, the scenery magical – and, of course, the weather helps.

Achievements outside of Judo?

Part of our charity work is that Destination Judo picks a major challenge each year.  In 2019 our team reached Everest Base Camp.  It was a gruelling 3 week trip living in a tent at altitude.

Favourite Food and drink?

Chicken.  I eat chicken nearly every day of my life.  So versatile – especially when accompanied by a nice glass of full-bodied, rich, red wine.  Perfect!
